About Michael Knapstein Photography


Michael Knapstein is a fine-art photographer based in Middleton, Wisconsin. His photographs have earned more than 250 national and international awards for work in both color and black and white. He was honored as the International Landscape and Seascape Photographer of the Year in the prestigious Pollux Awards (based on England). Photolucida (Portland, Oregon) has also twice named him a Critical Mass Finalist, widely considered to be one of the most important portfolio competitions in the world. His photographs have also been widely published and exhibited through a variety of solo, juried and group exhibitions around the globe.

  • Adore Noire Magazine Feature -- My "Midwest Memoir" portfolio was showcased in a 15-page feature story and interview in Issue 42 of Adore Noire magazine.  Published in Vancouver, Canada, Adore Noire is one of the world’s leading magazines devoted exclusively to black and white fine art photography. February 10, 2018.
  • The Center for Fine Art Photography Portfolio ShowCase 11 – My portfolio of 12 images was selected as one of 10 created by artists from around the world to be included in the 11th Annual Porfolio ShowCase publication and exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography. Fort Collins, Colorado. February, 2018.
  • Wisconsin Artists Biennial 2018 -- “After the Storm” is one of the works by 43 Wisconsin artists selected for a juried biennial exhibit at the Museum of Wisconsin Art. West Bend, Wisconsin.  February 3 – April 8, 2018.
  • Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 160 --“Forest Fog” exhibited at the Aberystwyth Arts Center in Wales. January 27 – March 10, 2017.
  • "Feature Shoot" Feature – Interview and 14 images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were featured in this leading international photography publication. January 16, 2018.


2017

  • Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 160 “Forest Fog” was selected as one of only 100 photographs from among more than 5,400 entries to be included in the 160th Annual International Photography Exhibition. The exhibit opened in London on October 12th in Old Truman Brewery during PHOTOBLOCK, which is part of the Photomonth London Photography Festival. The exhibit will tour throughout Great Britain for the next year. London, England. October, 2017.
  • Moscow International Fotography Awards (MIFA) – A total of 10 images received awards in three different categories. Eight images in the “Sedona Series” won First Place (Gold) in the Fine Art Landscape Category. “Blizzard Oak” won Second Place in the Nature Seasons category. And “Snow Owl” won Second Place in Nature Wildlife. Moscow, Russia. October, 2017.
  • Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3) – A series of five “Midwest Memoir” images won Third Place in the Nature/Landscape category. “Wawanissee Point” also won Honorable Mention in the same category. Paris, France. October, 2017.
  • Friends of Wisconsin State Parks – “Winter Oak” won an award in the group’s annual photography contest and was selected for inclusion in the 2018 Calendar, which has a circulation of more than 85,000 copies.October, 2017.
  • 12th Annual Black and White Spider Awards – “After the Storm” won Honorable Mention in the Fine Art Nature. “Blizzard Oak” was nominated in the same category. The competition attracted more than 7,556 entrants from 71 countries. London, England. October, 2017.
  • Lucie International Photography Awards -- A five-image series from my “Midwest Memoir” portfolio won Honorable Mention in the Nature/Landscape Category of the Lucie Foundation’s 2017 International Photography Awards. The competition received more than 12,000 entries from 115 countries. Beverly Hills, California. October, 2017.
  • Pollux Awards International Exhibition – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were invited to an exhibit of winners of the 9th Annual Pollux Awards. The exhibit will be held at Galeria Valid Foto BCN, located at Carrer Buenaventura Munoz 6 in the Arc de Triomf area. Barcelona, Spain. September 18 – 29, 2017.
  • Photolucida Critical Mass 2017 Finalist – The “Midwest Memoir” portfolio of 10 images was named a Finalist in  Critical Mass 2017, widely considered to be one of the most important photography portfolio competitions in the world. Portland, Oregon. September, 2017.

  • Feature Shoot Magazine “Dinner Time” was selected for an online juried exhibition entitled “Rural Life.” Feature Shoot showcases the work of international emerging and established photographers who are transforming the medium through compelling, cutting-edge projects.   • The WPGA Pollux Awards (10th Annual) – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were named the winner in the Landscape Category. The same series also received Honorable Mention in the Documentary category. Kent, United Kingdom. August, 2017.
  • Royal Photographic Society “After the Storm” and “Forest Fog” were shortlisted as Finalists for the 160th Annual International Print Exhibition. They were selected from among nearly 5,400 entries. Bath, England. July, 2017.
  • Soho Photo Gallery 2017 National Competition and Exhibition“After the Storm” was selected by juror Aline Smithson as one of 40 photographs to be exhibited (chosen from more than 2,000 entries). Founded in 1971 by a group of New York Times photographers, the Soho Photo Gallery is located in the TriBeCa district of New York City. July 5 – 22, 2017.  
  • Dubuque Museum of Art 2017 Biennial “Clothesline” and “Blizzard Oak” were selected for this five-state exhibition representing the best artwork from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri. The juror was Amanda C. Burdan, Ph.D., Associate Curator of the Brandywine River Museum of Arts in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Dubuque, Iowa. May 27 – August 20, 2017.    
  • Fluno Center Exhibition – Six images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were included in a group exhibition entitled “The Conservators” which was held in the main art gallery at the Fluno Center on the University of Wisconsin campus. Madison, Wisconsin. May 1 – June 30, 2017.

  • Charles Dodgson Black & White Awards – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were named Finalists in the Landscape and Seascape category of this international competition for black and white photography. “Winterscape” was named an Honorable Mention Winner. York, England. April, 2017.
  • The Print Swap from Feature Shoot – Two images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio (“Prairie Clouds” and “Dinner Time”) were selected to be part of The Print Swap initiative from Feature Shoot, a major online photography magazine. They selected 100 photographs from more than 10,000 submissions. Each artist selected will receive a print from one of the other artists. April, 2017.
  • Mother F Stop – Twenty-five images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were featured online by Mother F Stop, an online photography magazine. They featured the images through their website, Facebook page, Instagram feed and via email. April, 2017.
  • 10th Annual International Color Awards -- Nine images were nominated in three categories and two were named Honorable Mention winners -- “Star Light, Star Bright” in the Americana Category and “Great Blue Heron” in the Wildlife Category. Chosen from among more than 6,000 photographs from 78 countries. London, England. March, 2017.

  • “Trees” International Juried Exhibit – Famous photographer Michael Kenna selected “Forest Fog” from among more than 1,350 entries for a juried exhibition at the A. Smith Gallery. Johnson City, Texas. December 16, 2016 through January 29, 2017.
  • MIFA Exhibit in Crimea“Picket Fence” was included in an exhibit of winners from the Moscow International FotoAwards (Moscow, Russia) and the International Photography Awards (New York, USA)in an exhibit at the Franco Crimean Republican Scientific Library in Simferopol City, Crimea. December 13, 2016 - January 10, 2017. 
  • The WPGA Pollux Awards (Ninth Edition) – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were honored in the Documentary category. Kent, United Kingdom. November, 2016.
  • 11th Annual Black and White Spider Awards – Seven photographs were recognized in four different categories of one of the world’s largest black and white photography competitions. “Linda’ Farm” and “Picket Fence” in Fine Art. “Sedona Storm” and “Snowfall” in Nature. “Somerset House” and “Waiting” in Silhouette. Plus “Clothesline” in Still Life. The competition attracted more than 7,556 entrants from 71 countries. London, England. November, 2016.
  • National Historic Preservation Act 50th Anniversary Photo Contest “Canal Seed and Feed” – a photograph of a historical site in Wisconsin was selected as one of the Top 50 Winners. November, 2016.
  • Friends of Wisconsin State Parks – Two images received awards in the annual photography contest and were selected for inclusion in the 2017 Calendar, which has a circulation of more than 85,000 copies.“Big Bay State Park” for August and “Rocky Arbor State Park” for November. The awards were presented at the group’s Annual Awards Banquet in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. November 5th, 2016.
  • 8th Annual PhotoVisa  International Festival of Photography – “Picket Fence” was included in an international juried exhibition at the Novorossiysk State Historical Museum. The 80 images exhibited were selected from among winners in the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA) and the International Photography Awards. Novorossiysk, Russia. October 20 – 30, 2016.
  • International Photography Awards (Lucie Foundation) 2016 – Five images in a series entitled “Fenceline” received Honorable Mention Awards in the Architecture category. The competition received 17,039 entries from 162 countries. Beverly Hills, California. October, 2016.
  • 4th International Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography Exhibition – Five images included in an international juried exhibition at the Palazzo Italia (Romischer Hof), Unter den Linden. Berlin, Germany. October 4 - 29, 2016.
  • International Photography Awards (Lucie Foundation) 12th Annual – Five images in a series entitled “Fenceline” received Honorable Mention Awards in this prestigious international competition. They were selected from more than 17,000 entries from 164 countries. Beverly Hills, California. October, 2016.
  • Photolucida Critical Mass Finalist -- The "Midwest Memoir" portfolio of ten images was named a Finalist in the Critical Mass 2016 international portfolio competition, widely considered to be one of the most important competitions in contemporary photography. Portland, Oregon. August, 2016.
  • LensCulture CONNECT International Juried Exhibition -- “Clothesline” was selected by juror Aaron Schuman (England) for an international juried exhibition organized by LensCulture, one of the most prominent voices in contemporary photography.   • Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA) – Fourty-three images awarded in six different categories, including 2nd Place for Portfolio and Second Place for Fine Art Portfolio. Ten prints from the “Midwest Portfolio” included in an international exhibition at the Art Gallery Na Kashirke in Moscow from July 20 – August 7, 2016. The exhibit will then tour two countries.   • Royal Photographic Society“Clothesline” was named a finalist and was shortlisted for the 159th Annual International Print Exhibition.   • FOCUS Photo la – The 25th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition “Clothesline” was selected as one of only 20 images to be exhibited as part of an international juried exhibition organized by Photo Basel (Switzerland) and FOCUS Photo LA.
