About Michael Knapstein Photography


Michael Knapstein is a fine-art photographer based in Middleton, Wisconsin. His photographs have earned more than 250 national and international awards for work in both color and black and white. He was honored as the International Landscape and Seascape Photographer of the Year in the prestigious Pollux Awards (based on England). Photolucida (Portland, Oregon) also recently named him a Critical Mass Finalist, widely considered to be one of the most important portfolio competitions in the world. His photographs have also been widely published and exhibited through a variety of solo, juried and group exhibitions around the globe.

 2017

  • Pollux Awards International Exhibition – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were invited to an exhibit of winners of the 9th Annual Pollux Awards. The exhibited at The Framers Gallery in the fashionable Fitzrovia neighborhood of London near Oxford Street. London, England. September 18 – 29, 2017.
  • Soho Photo Gallery 2017 National Competition and Exhibition“After the Storm” was selected by juror Aline Smithson as one of 40 photographs to be exhibited (chosen from more than 2,000 entries). Founded in 1971 by a group of New York Times photographers, the Soho Photo Gallery is located in the TriBeCa district of New York City. July 5 – 22, 2017.  
  • Dubuque Museum of Art 2017 Biennial “Clothesline” and “Blizzard Oak” were selected for this five-state exhibition representing the best artwork from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri. The juror was Amanda C. Burdan, Ph.D., Associate Curator of the Brandywine River Museum of Arts in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Dubuque, Iowa. May 27 – August 20, 2017.    
  • Fluno Center Exhibition – Six images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were included in a group exhibition entitled “The Conservators” which was held in the main art gallery at the Fluno Center on the University of Wisconsin campus. Madison, Wisconsin. May 1 – June 30, 2017.

  • Charles Dodgson Black & White Awards – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” series were named Finalists in the Landscape and Seascape category of this international competition for black and white photography. “Winterscape” was named an Honorable Mention Winner. York, England. April, 2017.
  • The Print Swap from Feature Shoot – Two images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio (“Prairie Clouds” and “Dinner Time”) were selected to be part of The Print Swap initiative from Feature Shoot, a major online photography magazine. They selected 100 photographs from more than 10,000 submissions. Each artist selected will receive a print from one of the other artists. April, 2017.
  • Mother F Stop – Twenty-five images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were featured online by Mother F Stop, an online photography magazine. They featured the images through their website, Facebook page, Instagram feed and via email. April, 2017.
  • 10th Annual International Color Awards -- Nine images were nominated in three categories and two were named Honorable Mention winners -- “Star Light, Star Bright” in the Americana Category and “Great Blue Heron” in the Wildlife Category. Chosen from among more than 6,000 photographs from 78 countries. London, England. March, 2017.
  • PhotoMidwest Exhibit “Forest Fog” exhibited at the UW Hospital. Madison, Wisconsin. March 4 – April 1, 2017.

  • “Trees” International Juried Exhibit – Famous photographer Michael Kenna selected “Forest Fog” from among more than 1,350 entries for a juried exhibition at the A. Smith Gallery. Johnson City, Texas. December 16, 2016 through January 29, 2017.
  • MIFA Exhibit in Crimea“Picket Fence” was included in an exhibit of winners from the Moscow International FotoAwards (Moscow, Russia) and the International Photography Awards (New York, USA)in an exhibit at the Franco Crimean Republican Scientific Library in Simferopol City, Crimea. December 13, 2016 - January 10, 2017. 
  • The WPGA Pollux Awards (Ninth Edition) – Five images from the “Midwest Memoir” portfolio were honored in the Documentary category. Kent, United Kingdom. November, 2016.
  • 11th Annual Black and White Spider Awards – Seven photographs were recognized in four different categories of one of the world’s largest black and white photography competitions. “Linda’ Farm” and “Picket Fence” in Fine Art. “Sedona Storm” and “Snowfall” in Nature. “Somerset House” and “Waiting” in Silhouette. Plus “Clothesline” in Still Life. The competition attracted more than 7,556 entrants from 71 countries. London, England. November, 2016.
  • National Historic Preservation Act 50th Anniversary Photo Contest “Canal Seed and Feed” – a photograph of a historical site in Wisconsin was selected as one of the Top 50 Winners. November, 2016.
  • Friends of Wisconsin State Parks – Two images received awards in the annual photography contest and were selected for inclusion in the 2017 Calendar, which has a circulation of more than 85,000 copies.“Big Bay State Park” for August and “Rocky Arbor State Park” for November. The awards were presented at the group’s Annual Awards Banquet in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. November 5th, 2016.
  • 8th Annual PhotoVisa  International Festival of Photography – “Picket Fence” was included in an international juried exhibition at the Novorossiysk State Historical Museum. The 80 images exhibited were selected from among winners in the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA) and the International Photography Awards. Novorossiysk, Russia. October 20 – 30, 2016.
  • International Photography Awards (Lucie Foundation) 2016 – Five images in a series entitled “Fenceline” received Honorable Mention Awards in the Architecture category. The competition received 17,039 entries from 162 countries. Beverly Hills, California. October, 2016.
  • 4th International Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography Exhibition – Five images included in an international juried exhibition at the Palazzo Italia (Romischer Hof), Unter den Linden. Berlin, Germany. October 4 - 29, 2016.
  • International Photography Awards (Lucie Foundation) 12th Annual – Five images in a series entitled “Fenceline” received Honorable Mention Awards in this prestigious international competition. They were selected from more than 17,000 entries from 164 countries. Beverly Hills, California. October, 2016.
  • Photolucida Critical Mass Finalist -- The "Midwest Memoir" portfolio of ten images was named a Finalist in the Critical Mass 2016 international portfolio competition, widely considered to be one of the most important competitions in contemporary photography. Portland, Oregon. August, 2016.
  • LensCulture CONNECT International Juried Exhibition -- “Clothesline” was selected by juror Aaron Schuman (England) for an international juried exhibition organized by LensCulture, one of the most prominent voices in contemporary photography. The exhibit included 100 photographs by 42 photographers from around the world. Amsterdam, Netherlands. August, 2016.
  • Best of Photography 2016“Before the Storm” was selected for inclusion in a hardcover coffee table book published by Photographer’s Forum magazine. Selected from among more than 10,000 entries from 74 countries. Santa Barbara, California. August, 2016.
  • International Color Journal 6 Vol 1“State Fair” was featured as a full-color, double-page spread on pages 146-147. London, England. August, 2016. 
  • Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA) – Fourty-three images awarded in six different categories, including 2nd Place for Portfolio and Second Place for Fine Art Portfolio. Ten prints from the “Midwest Portfolio” included in an international exhibition at the Art Gallery Na Kashirke in Moscow from July 20 – August 7, 2016. The exhibit will then tour two countries.   • Royal Photographic Society“Clothesline” was named a finalist and was shortlisted for the 159th Annual International Print Exhibition. RPS is the world's oldest photography organization and their print exhibition is also the longest running photo exhibition in the world.  Bath, England. July, 2016.
  • La Grande Photo -- International Photographic Awards – Four images were recognized in three categories. “Winterscape” and “December Fog” in Landscape. “Morning Fog” in Fine Art. And “Ghost of the North” in Wildlife. Paris, France. July, 2015.

  • Wisconsin Triennial 2016 Finalist -- Chosen as one of 95 Finalists for the Wisconsin Triennial 2016 exhibit organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Madison, Wisconsin. May, 2016.

  • The WPGA Pollux Awards (Eighth Edition) – 13 images were honored in three categories. They included “Gibraltar Rock”, “Wawanissee Point” and “Busy Bee” solo images plus “Waterfall” Series and “Shoreline” Series of five images each. Kent, United Kingdom. February, 2016.
  • FOCUS Photo la – The 25th Annual International Los Angeles Photographic Art Exposition “Clothesline” was selected as one of only 20 images to be exhibited as part of an international juried exhibition organized by Photo Basel (Switzerland) and FOCUS Photo LA. It was exhibited at The Reef in the LA Mart. Los Angeles, California. January 21 – 24, 2016.
  • Monochrome Awards“Picket Fence” and “Angry Eagle” received Honorable Mention Awards in Fine Art and Wildlife categories of this prestigious Monochrome International Black and White Photography Contest which received more than 7,200 entries from 79 countries. London, England. January, 2016.

  • 10th Annual Black and White Spider Awards“Before the Storm” received Honor Roll distinction in the Fine Art category of one of the world’s largest black and white photography competitions.   • Friends of Wisconsin State Parks“Pewit’s Nest” was selected as one of 12 award winners in their annual photography contest. The image is featured in their 2016 Calendar for the month of October. Madison, Wisconsin. November, 2015.
